What Is a Tech Stack?
Definition
A tech stack is the combination of programming languages, frameworks, databases and cloud services used to build and run a software application, usually split into front end, back end and infrastructure.
Parts of a tech stack
- Front end: what users see, for example React or Next.js.
- Back end: business logic and APIs, for example Node.js with Express.
- Database: where data lives, for example MongoDB.
- Infrastructure: hosting and deployment, for example Vercel or Cloudflare.
The MERN stack (MongoDB, Express, React, Node.js) is a popular example that uses JavaScript or TypeScript everywhere.
How to choose a tech stack
Choose proven technologies your team can hire for, that fit your product’s needs, and that have a strong ecosystem. Popularity matters because it makes hiring and maintenance easier.
